The Fast Pitch division is organized into the following age categories (based on age as of December 31 in the year in which the season is played):
Masters - age 35 (women) or 40 (men) and up
Seniors - no age restrictions either way
U23
Within each age category, fast pitch division leagues are classified into three tiers:
A:
This is the highest level of competition. "A" teams generally practice throughout the winter (some staring in January), play more games and travel to neighbouring provinces and states for tournaments. All "A" teams participate in a provincial championship in early July, with the top team(s) advancing to the Canadian championship tournament (usually held between late July and mid August). "A" teams are formed by private organizations based on try-outs normally held in early September.
Open:
This is an intermediate level game, and is run through both private organizations and community clubs organized on geographic boundaries. All open teams participate in a provincial championship in early July, with the top team(s) advancing to the Western Canadian championship tournament (usually held between late July and mid August).
Intermediate:
This is a purely recreational game, and is run through private organizations and community clubs. Most Intermediate teams start in mid-April, and play through to mid-July, when a provincial championship is held.
